The oldest native Croatian city on the Adriatic is preparing a historic celebration! On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, Šibenik celebrates its City Day and the feast of its heavenly patron, Saint Michael.

This year holds an exceptionally grand significance. The entire city is breathing in the spirit of the momentous 960th anniversary of the first written mention of Šibenik in the charter of King Petar Krešimir IV (1066). Through the multi-month cultural and educational program „Šibenik 960“, the streets of Krešimir's city are turning into a stage of rich history, traditions, and top-tier entertainment.

Šibenik Poljana – The Pulse of the Festivities and Morning Wake-up Call

The central city square, Poljana, will serve as the main gathering point and the starting line for the celebration.

Main Event: In the early morning hours, the traditional musical wake-up call by the Šibenik City Brass Band will echo through the square, waking the town in a festive mood. Poljana is also the place where you can experience the holiday bustle, meet locals dressed in elegant traditional folk costumes, and enjoy fairs showcasing authentic local products.

Šibenik Riva – The Promenade of Songs, Processions, and Tradition

Following the morning gatherings, the central religious part of the celebration moves toward the historic core. A solemn procession of believers and church dignitaries winds through the old city streets, leading up to the grand Holy Mass held at the Republic of Croatia Square, right in front of the magnificent St. James Cathedral. Afterward, the celebration moves down to the waterfront.

Main Event: The Šibenik waterfront (Riva) becomes the stage for the grand finale of the popular Šibenik Klapa Evenings. Accompanied by the scent of traditional Dalmatian seafood and local snacks, the sounds of traditional a cappella klapa singing and festively docked boats create an authentic Mediterranean vibe. The waterfront also traditionally hosts formal sessions where public recognitions are given to meritorious citizens, alongside the announcement of the Šibenska grandeca award.

Banj City Beach – Panoramic Views and Free Entry to Šibenik's Fortresses

If you want to enjoy a stunning panorama of the town while the church bells toll in the background, Banj city beach is your perfect stop.

Main Event: On City Day, the Fortress of Culture Šibenik public institution traditionally organizes an Open Door Day with free admission to three land fortresses: St. Michael’s Fortress, Barone Fortress, and St. John’s Fortress. Visitors can enjoy guided tours, historical lectures, and educational workshops for children inside the ancient stone walls.
