Vinkovci

The town of Vinkovci is located in the extreme northeast of Croatia, between the Danube and the Sava on the river Bosut.

Vinkovci is the oldest city in Europe continuously inhabited for 8200 years.

It is a city with a very rich architectural heritage. Today, Vinkovci is a spatially large city in the structure of which several larger squares and main, long street routes can be seen, which were the basis of urban development.

An important place among the many important details in the city’s past is occupied by the oldest Indo-European calendar, Orion. It has been established that the carved ornaments on Orion depict the constellations that dominate the night sky above Vinkovci.

In the center of Vinkovci, the symbols of the universe, time and civilization stand together.

There are many associations in the city that keep the customs of Šokadija alive, such as: handicrafts, work on a potter's wheel, painting bottles, painting zucchini, making folk costumes, but also preserving the original dance and songs, customs such as feathers and making brandy.

The greatest folklore event in this part of Europe is certainly Vinkovačke jeseni in autumn. It represents the popular-scholarly gathering of original national culture and stimulates the preservation of cultural heritage through song and the playing of instruments, and contributes greatly towards preventing many customs from falling into oblivion. The pulse of the city is accelerating after the summer break and all cafes, clubs and restaurants wear the most beautiful clothes to show the rich heritage they are proud of. In addition to folklore evenings, the Folklore Festival, the highlight is the ceremonial parade of all participants on Sunday morning, after which all guests dance!
