Sinj

The Town of Sinj is located in the heart of the Dalmatian hinterland, at an elevation of 320 metres, and at 30 km distance from the Adriatic Sea. Surrounded by beautiful mountains of Kamešnica, Svilaja and Dinara, Sinj is situated at the edge of the fertile Sinjsko Polje Valley, which is invigorated by the crystal clear and cold Cetina River.

A city of chivalry, rich cultural heritage and centuries-old tradition.

The most famous event is of course Alka Tournament which is at the dawn of its tercentenary and under protection of UNESCO as world intangible heritage. It is held held every year on the first Sunday in August.

For many, Sinj evokes associations with the painting of Our Lady of Sinj, which is located in the Church of Our Lady of Sinj. The painting of Our Lady of Sinj can be counted among the most beautiful paintings created by Christian art.

Rera singing of Sinj was also recognised by UNESCO, in 2010 it was included on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

The craft of boat making in Otok near Sinj is Croatian Ministry of Culture intangible cultural heritage under protection.

In the spirit of reviving tradition and keeping past times from oblivion, over past few years different events have been organised in Otok near Sinj, like the races of Cetina boats, the Žabarijada (frog-jumping contest), clean-up campaigns of the Cetina bed, and the revival of traditional fishing using the Cetina boat.

The town of Sinj and the magical Cetinska krajina region are the gastronomical haven of the Dalmatian Hinterland. A famous local specialty listed as Croatia’s immaterial cultural heritage is arambaša of Sinj. There are also other delicacies such as frogs, river crabs, trout from the Cetina River, rafioli, and many other foods characteristic to the Dalmatian Hinterland. The local hrvaština (‘rvašćina, hrvašćina) is a distinctive wine and indispensable part of the enogastronomy in Sinj.
