Karlobag

Karlobag is a small town between Velebit and the sea, located on an important road that leads along the Adriatic highway from Rijeka to Dubrovnik, and inland to Gospić, Plitvice Lakes and Zagreb. Karlobag is a wonderful combination of the Mediterranean and the continent, the crystal clear sea and the most beautiful Croatian mountain, which is only a few minutes drive away.

It was named after Duke Charles who rebuilt it in 1525. After the Turks completely destroyed and burned it.

The combination of mountain and sea has given this area an ideal combination of climate - from the Mediterranean along the coast to the mountain in Baške Oštarije at an altitude of 1000 meters. The natural benefits of the relief and climate provide optimal conditions for year-round tourism. In summer swimming and sunbathing, in winter skiing and sledding, in autumn hiking and walking on Velebit, and in spring enjoying the awakening of spring on Velebit. Karlobag lives with the wind, and due to hurricane gusts of the bora, this section of the Adriatic Highway is often closed.

Karlobag is a place of gastronomic delicacies of Mediterranean and continental Velebit style, with a rich and varied culinary offer. The natural taste of the sea and numerous Mediterranean specialties have not changed over the centuries.

Karlobag can be reached from Gospić via Baške Oštarije. At Oštarijski sedlo or Stari vrata, at an altitude of 927 m with a view of Karlobag, the island of Pag and the entire Velebit Channel, there is Kubus - a monument to the construction of the road Karlobag - Gospić across Velebit to which 33 steps lead.

It used to be important as a ferry port for the island of Pag, but it lost that significance when the bridge was built and the ferry line Prizna - Žigljen was established.
