The city of Senj is known for its carnival and carnival events, both in winter and summer. This is the time when the carnival masters have power in the city and the carnival master takes over the keys to the city. For centuries, every Saturday in January and February, cheerful and spirited folk parties, balls, masked parties with dancing have been held in Senj and the surrounding towns. The carnival period begins after Epiphany and lass until Ash Wednesday.
In the town of Senj and its surroundings, the custom of Carnival existed and was widespread more than three centuries ago, but according to scarce data, it is assumed that this custom is more than 500 years old. These events can be attributed to Dionysian origins, i.e. they can be traced from the Roman period through the Middle Ages to the present day.
The Senj winter and summer carnivals confirm the Senj carnival tradition, which has been built up for centuries, year after year, and which can only be experienced and felt by coming to Senj during carnival time.
Senj Carnival is one of the longest-standing traditions of the town of Senj. This year's 366th edition begins on January 10th when the carnival procession departs from Pavlinski Square, and continues with a special indoor program, where themed carnival balls and traditional children's redoubts will be held. Each ball will have a special theme, giving the carnival participants the opportunity for maximum creativity. Those who put the most effort into their costumes can expect rich prizes that will be awarded to the most beautiful and original masks.
Sunday's children's parades will be the perfect opportunity for little ones to show off their masks, dance, and enjoy a program tailored to their age.
