Benkovac is a small town in northern Dalmatia. It was named after the castle built by the princes of Benkovići in the 15th century. The fort is located on a hill above the city and now is used as a native museum.
The town of Benkovac was created on the junction of fertile fields of Ravni kotari and the stiff karst of Bukovica, surrounded by 5 National Parks and 3 Nature Parks. There are still old customs and lifestyles live as well as the folk costumes that are often carried by elderly people today. Benkovac is a city of rich cultural and historical heritage, an idyllic rural atmosphere and picturesque landscapes. Only 15 km away from the sea, Benkovac and its surroundings hide numerous pearls of natural beauty, cultural and historical monuments. In the picturesque villages in the area you will have a feeling that time is up and the authentic rural architecture has been preserved. Every year, Benkovac organizes the event "Snail steps" - gastro event, preparation and snails tasting, a manifestation that promotes another autochthonous gastro story of the Benkovac region. And the Croatian championship in the snail race is held, an event that is an integral part of this event, which is regularly monitored by all leading domestic and foreign media.
