Sand Art Festival at the confluence of the Neretva

On the sandbanks of the Neretva confluence, these days you can see a creative combination of artistic expression and nature, as artists visit the Sand Art Festival in Opuzen and create admirable works in the sand. The drawings are author's works and part of the third Sand Art Neretva Festival, which takes place from September 15 to 19.

Sand art means drawing spatial drawings using a rake or a stick, then shaping sand sculptures, as well as other activities, that are interesting and accessible to all visitors, that is, artists or lovers of land art. It is an exceptional art of shaping sand, that is, a creative combination of artistic expression and nature, with which the artists say that the Neretva also has its own crop circles. The difference is that the Neretva ones are in sand, and hardly anyone will ever decipher them. This story begins few years ago as a part of Art Festival Zen Opuzen. Today it is a separate event held every year at the end of summer.

Art that disappears with the tide and the first waves. The author of numerous drawings on the sand, first and foremost a lover of nature, academic sculptor and founder of the festival is Nikola Faller from Osijek, who finds inspiration mostly in sacred geometry, but sometimes also in folklore motifs. The tools for drawing, as well as the substrate, were given to him by nature, rakes and stakes.

Some of the drawings are fifty meters long, and it is impossible to see them in their entirety from the ground. That's why the best view is from the air, with a drone. And just like that, filmed from the air, his works travel around the world, because only the lucky ones who visit the Neretva estuary during low tide can see this combination of creativity and nature live.
