In the past few years, Croatia, and especially Dalmatia, has been the film set of numerous Hollywood blockbusters and hit series. Robin Hood, Star Wars, Mamma Mia, Hitman's Bodyguard, Princess Diana's Diaries, The White Crow, Bliss are just some of the them.
Thanks to the growing popularity of Croatia as a tourist destination, the cooperation between Hollywood and Croatia is becoming stronger. And thanks to the Game of Thrones series and Star Wars, many tourists have decided to choose Dubrovnik as the next destination they will visit.
Dubrovnik is still one of the most desirable destinations for world stars. After many famous world stars such as Owen Wilson, Magic Johnson, Roman Abramovič, Manuel Neuer, Russell D'Angelo, Tamara Ecclestone visited Dubrovnik this summer, it is currently occupied by Hollywood megastars, Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal. Dubrovnik has once again become the backdrop for the big film title "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent", currently the only American film co-production in Europe.
Nicolas Cage in the lead role is actually making a film about his own life and playing a fictional version of himself. A total of 412 film workers work on production (of which 97 Croatian citizens are expected) and about 300 Croatian citizens as extras. This is not Cage's first time filming in Croatia - in February 2009, he filmed scenes from the medieval spectacle "Season of the Witch" at Cape Kamenjak in Premantura near Pula. A new hit, the premiere of the film "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" has been announced for March 2021. The shooting of the film is closely monitored by strong security on the set, armed people are monitoring the coast, and Dubrovnik divers are engaged.
The shooting of the film takes place in the atrium of an impressive building, the Dubrovnik Art Gallery. The beauty of the Art Gallery, which was originally conceived and built from 1932 to 1939, as a representative family palace of the Dubrovnik shipowner Božo Banac, served as an excellent film location. It is also being filmed on the serpentines in Trsteno, and after ‘Game of Thrones’ and the Italian series ‘Borgia’, this is the third big filming at that location.
Hollywood productions in Croatia can literally be measured in millions of euros. And with this kind of promotion of Dubrovnik in the last six months, hardly anyone can measure up.
