The race is the only knighthood game in Istria that, besides being the guardian of tradition and culture, has become a real attraction, joining the horsehood and the sport spirit.

It was a folk horse race started in 1976. in Barban, in line with the knightly competition that at the time of the Venetian administration in that town was arranged at the end of the 17th century at the the feast of spirits. The oldest preserved record of the Race dates back to 1696. and the participants were mostly noblemen and citizens from Istria cities that owned horses and knights' equipment. Each competitor participated in 3 races, striving in a gallop with a hoop of an opulent ring made up of two cross-linked circular ring circles.

Till then it has grown into an annual sports and entertainment event. The Company of the Ring Race leads it’s organization since 1979. The race became a trademark of Barban and one of the most famous summer events in Istria.

Today's participants - barbarian knights have to compete in a distance of as much as 150 meters in less than 12 seconds in three races and hit the ring with a spear. The 16 horsemen in the race wear Barban folk costumes. If you want to track the race this is the way of scoring: The goal in the lap is borne by 3 points, the goal in the field above is two, under the middle one, and in the side field half a point. The rider who wins the highest points in the three races becomes the runner-up of the Race.

You can watch the race on August 19th on the 43rd race for the ring and find out who will win the title of the best horseman this year!
