Vela Luka

In the western part of the island Korčula, in the vast and deeply bay, there is the town of Vela Luka. Vela Luka is the second largest place on our islands and many boaters choose it as their anchorage and safe harbor.

The population of Vela Luka mainly deals with wine growing, fishing, olive growing, agriculture and tourism. Thanks to a pleasant climate, clear sea, rich tourist offer and a large number of cultural and historical monuments, this place has become a very attractive tourist destination for the last few years. In the center of the town, there is a cultural center - a city library, a museum and a gallery. On the southern slope of „Pinski rat“ there is the archaeological site of Vela Spila, which is an indispensable place for every visitor. To the north, at the entrance to Vela Luka is the Proizd island with a three beautiful beaches – Bili boci, beaches of white rocks and a perfect turquoise sea color. According to the Croatian Tourist Board, Bili boci were declared as the Beach of the Year in 2007, while the British Daily Telegraf put them among the TOP 5 most beautiful Adriatic beaches. You can also swim at one of the attractive beaches of which the City Beach Vranac is especially worth mentioning. Also, another „big plus“ of Vela Luka is the "dogs friendly beach" - Plitvine.

Like every Dalmatian place, Vela Luka also organizes numerous festivals during the summer. On the day of St. Ivan, or June 24, residents celebrate the beginning of the summer season by the traditional rowing boat race. During the summer, you can enjoy many fisherman's evenings, concerts of classical and entertaining music, performances of folklore and other attractive events.

It is worth mentioning that Vela Luka is the birthplace of one of the most beautiful vocalists of the Croatian music scene - deceased Oliver Dragojević, whom the lovely people from Vela Luka organized a dignified funeral which the world has never seen before.

Active holiday lovers will enjoy water polo, football, handball, basketball, sailing and other water sports. And those who like good nightlife will also love this place. You can spend the night in a discotheque or at one of the numerous bars.

Gastronomy of Vela Luka is also extremely rich so you will be able to enjoy a quality dinner and a glass of wine along the coast.
