Pag

Everyone who have been on the island of Pag was surprised by this unusual landscape. The island of Pag resembles of the Moon’s landscape and is almost completely covered with a salt which the strong wind called “bura” from Velebit’s channel spread to the island.

The town of Pag is located on the southwestern part of the island and has been mooved several times in its history. In the 15th century construction of today's city of Pag started and one of the famous builders who participated in the construction of the town was Juraj Dalmatinac.

The Middle Ages were marked by the production and trade of salt that Pag is known for today. The former salt warehouses have now been converted into a permanent salt exhibition in a museum where you can see the tools and devices by which the salt was transported in the past. The salt storages in Pag are a protected monument of culture.

In the center of the town stands the church of the Assumption of Mary, a memorial to the church and the event is dedicated to the feast of Our Lady, which is marked by the procession and the celebration on August 15 every year. There is also Knežev dvor which is intact and the renovated square from the Middle Age.

Lacing is a centuries-old tradition in Pag and dates back to the 15th century. Making Pag’s lace has nurtured through the centuries and the way is passed from knee to knee. Each lace is distinctly unique and this slender and hardworking handwork still lives today in the streets of the old town.

One of the most famous products of the island of Pag is the famous Pag’s cheese with a specific flavor and Pag’s lamb. Very little grass that is very salty due to the salt spreading by “bura” and the sheep that feed that grass and the aromatic herbs such as silk and sage give a specific type of milk and a specific taste of lamb meat.

 One of the attractions of the town of Pag is Lokunja with healing mud in the southwestern part directly next to the town's Prosika beach. It is a shallow area of the shallow sea, on the bottom of which there is a wealth of peloid deposits, a healing sludge. The strength is proven not only by experience but also by numerous scientific researches. It is used for the treatment of rheumatic diseases, but also for the treatment of various dermatological diseases.

The Carnival in Pag is something that people from Pag are specially ready for. Winter and summer carnival is what attracts many tourists. The culmination of the carnival ends with the crazy entertainment at the square of Petar Krešimir IV, with a special dance and burning of doll Marko as a tradition. He is the culprit for all the trouble and evil that has happened over the year. The carnival ends with the act of burning the doll.

The island of Pag is located in such a geographical position that the middle of the island crosses the 15th eastern longitude of the easternmost longitude, which accounts for Central European time. It is marked with a marble monument with a drawn meridian. At this point we can safely say that it is the most accurate time in Croatia. Due to the 15th meridian section, the town of Pag had one of the first sun watches in Europe that were located on the coastal part of the old city core. The 15 meridian is located under the highest peak of Sv. Vid about 5 km from Pag and on the macadam road, which continues from the Bošana region towards the beach of Zrće.

On the western exit of the town Pag, on the road leading to Novalja, there is Vidikovac from which you can enjoy the beautiful panorama view of the city of Pag and it is the ideal spot for photographing and creating unforgettable memories.
