The Samobor carnival has great significance for Samobor and its tourism and is one of the trademarks of Samobor. The Ministry of Culture and Media has declared the carnival custom of Samobor Carnival an intangible cultural asset.
The Samobor Carnival, the longest carnival tradition of Croats, will present its jubilee 200th edition from 6st to 17th February. Two centuries of carnival tradition, masquerades, satire and spelunking will be celebrated with a rich and diverse program, because: "Fools are fools every day, and smart people only on Carnival!".It is the lavish carnival by which Samobor’s people driving away the evil forces of the previous year, saying goodbye to the winter and looking forward to the upcoming spring.
The main role traditionally is played by the Sraka, Prince, Fiškal and Sudec, who officially open the Carnival Republic on February 6st by handing the keys and proclaiming the Free Carnival Republic at the main Samobor square. This is a special year because Samobor is celebrating 200 years of carnival tradition. As one of the oldest events of its kind in this part of Europe, Samobor Carnival is preparing numerous surprises and artistic performances for its anniversary. A record number of visitors and more than 3,000 masked children in parades are expected and more than 50 outside groups from more than 30 cities in Croatia and even Slovenia. Traditional Samobor donuts are prepared in pastry shops, and many visitors come precisely for the homemade food and special atmosphere.
The central place of all carnival events this year too is King Tomislav Square, under the watchful eye of LiveCamCroatia webcam which provide an excellent view of the events. There are more than 14 concerts at two locations - the Square of the Carnival Giants and the Carnival Tent. Among the performers are Severina, Miach and Grše, Željko Bebek, Neda Ukraden, Mate Bulić, Gazde, Parni Valjak, Dalmatino and Željko Samardžić. The event will close at the Square of the Carnival Giants with a concert by the group Dubioza kolektiv.
