Beside Christmas spirit, Lošinj is currently living also sporting spirit and it is hosting the 60th New Year's Cup of Spearfishing on December 14th.
Lošinj's sea is rich in fish, but the catch depends primarily on weather conditions. Mali Lošinj is the cradle of spearfishing. In 1950, the first spearfishing rifle arrived in Mali Lošinj as a new fishing tackle, and the first spearfishing championship was held in Mali Lošinj in 1957. and since than it has been permanently enrolled in the spearfishing map.
Enthusiasts of SRD "Udice" who organize the spearfishing competition came up with the idea to organize an spearfishing competition just before the New Year. While the whole of Europe is covered with December snow, Mali Lošinj is quite comfortable, so it draw the attention of vistors and guests to the mild Lošinj climate. The idea was realized in 1959, and the tradition of holding New Year's competitions in spearfishing has continued to this day.
The competition is held in the waters of the island of Lošinj. After the end of the hunt, the catch is handed over to the mother ship. At the end of the competition and the weighing of the catch, the announcement of the winners and the awarding of medals, as well as the closing ceremony of the championship in the main square of Malošinj, will follow.
