Beside Christmas spirit, Lošinj is currently living also sporting spirit and it is hosting the 58th New Year's Cup of Spearfishing on December 14th.
Lošinj's sea is rich in fish, but the catch depends primarily on weather conditions. Mali Lošinj is the cradle of spearfishing. In 1950, the first spearfishing rifle arrived in Mali Lošinj as a new fishing tackle, and the first spearfishing championship was held in Mali Lošinj in 1957. and since than it has been permanently enrolled in the spearfishing map.
Enthusiasts of SRD "Udice" who organize the spearfishing competition came up with the idea to organize an spearfishing competition just before the New Year. While the whole of Europe is covered with December snow, Mali Lošinj is quite comfortable, so it draw the attention of vistors and guests to the mild Lošinj climate. The idea was realized in 1959, and the tradition of holding New Year's competitions in spearfishing has continued to this day.
The most interesting part is the arrival of the competitors (competition 9-14 pm) and the beginning of weighing the catch in the sport hall at Bočac at 5:30 pm (14.12.2019). After the competition ends and the weighing of the catch is followed by the announcement of the winner and the awarding of medals and the closing ceremony of the championship.
