Celebration of the Day of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and Croatian Veterans Day

On Sunday,on 5^th of August, the Day of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving and the Day of Croatian Defenders are celebrated - one of the most significant days in the recent Croatian history. The central celebration is traditionally held in Knin, but will be celebrated in other Croatian cities as well. Knin is the place of symbolism - the place from which after it’s liberation and raising the Croatian flag, the first message was sent to citizens of Croatia by the first President Franjo Tuđman, and it has been 23 years since then.

Day of Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving and the Day of Croatian Defenders are celebrated as a memorial to victory in the Homeland War. On that day in 1995, after four years of occupation of almost a third of Croatian territory, refugee life and fear of hostile attacks on exposed Croatian cities and after numerous unsuccessful negotiations and peace initiatives, the Croatian Army liberated the occupied town of Knin in the Military-Order Operation Storm. The day we pay tribute and gratitude to all the Croatian defenders who have laid their lives on the foundations of the independent and sovereign of the Republic of Croatia.

The candles will be lit, wreaths on monuments to fallen Croatian warriors through whole Croatia, but this magnificent day will be also filled with socializing, song, good food and drink, festives, various sports events, rich programs.
