Gradski toranj jedan je od simbola Rijeke. Stari toranj uništen je u potresu 1750. godine. Prilikom obnove 1873. godine, ugrađen je sat koji je pokazivao točno vrijeme na Svjetskoj izložbi u Beču. On funkcionira i danas. Dana 19.04.2017. na vrh Gradskog tornja ponovo je postavljen dvoglavi orao – simbol grada Rijeke.

The oldest traces of human life in the present-day Rijeka originate from the old stone age, and the remains of prehistoric fort (Solin above Martinscice, Trsatki Hill and Veli Vrh – Gradisce above Rjecina) from the Bronze and Iron Ages.
Such a settlement dominated Rijeka's bay and secured the port in the age of the Illyrians (Liburns).
The Romans moved closer to the sea, on the right side of the mouth of Rjecine into the Adriatic (Jadran), on the site of the todays Old Town.

Such a postition gentle slopes, narrow coastal zone, abundant drinking water, and sheltered bay with a natural port, this city had all the qualities to develop into an important port and trading city.
1750th year Rijeka was afflicted by strong earthquakes that continued throughout the year, and delayed the development of Rijeka.
After the earthquake, refineries, paper mills, hydroplants, thermalplants, gas works opened and in 1873. Rijeka began to associate with Karlovac.
In 1899. the first electric tram is released to traffic.
Rijeka today with its surrounding area has about 200,000 inhabitants and had became the center of the western Croatia.
